The Low Income Housing Institute and Seattle Department of Neighborhoods are pleased to announce the Upbeat on Jackson Community Concert Series at Ernestine Anderson Place, 2010 S. Jackson St.

 Starting Sunday August 17 and continuing monthly for a year, Upbeat on Jackson will bring music back to the historic Jackson Street Corridor where such jazz legends as Quincy Jones and Ernestine Anderson got their start. All concerts feature talented musicians and are free and open to the public.

The series kicks off at 4pm with country, rock, and soul singer Mary McBride, who notably performed on the soundtrack and on-screen of the Academy Award winning movie Brokeback Mountain, and has worked with Elton John. McBride show is part of her popular Home Tour, which brings live concerts to supportive-housing communities, long-term health care centers for veterans, homeless shelters, senior apartments, and homes for people with mental and physical disabilities. The audiences served by the Home Tour reflect the city’s diverse populations and include families with children, recent immigrants, seniors, veterans and the disabled. The Wall Street Journal describes The Home Tour as: “a way of highlighting how communities can be nurtured, whether by sharing shelter, stories or live music,” and The Washington Post describes the tour as “extraordinary.”

In keeping with this community spirit, McBride will be joined on stage by local musicians and residents. This show will feature performances by host site Ernestine Anderson Place resident pianist Michael Dare, saxophonist Tony Mack, who lives at LIHI’s Glen Apartments, and special guest Sofia Smith, a gifted jazz singer and recent high school grad who will be entering college in the fall.
