The P-Patch Community Gardening Program will also honor the work of Paul Horiuchi through the development of a new P-Patch community garden. Named the Horiuchi Park P-Patch Community Garden, this P-Patch will recognize his artistry through design elements along with biographical signage and an honorary garden. To be completed this summer, the P-Patch is located at the corner of Boren and Yesler and will have spaces for 30 families to grow organic food.

Seattle Department of Neighborhoods recently awarded more than $600,000 in matching funds to support neighborhood projects across the city of Seattle. Thirty-three community organizations received awards from the city’s Neighborhood Matching Fund Program for projects as diverse as street murals to street fairs. The Small and Simple Projects Fund, one of three funds managed by Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, provides cash awards of up to $25,000 in matching funds to community organizations committed to fostering and building a better community. The 2013 spring awards ranged from $3,180 to $25,000, and the organizations have pledged to match the city’s $606,526 contribution with resources valued at nearly $734,838. 

“This program recognizes the dedication and volunteerism of community members working together to improve their neighborhood,” said Mayor Mike McGinn. “Whether the projects are for physical improvements or a community celebration, the community decides what it needs; and with the help f the Neighborhood Matching Fund, dedicates its time and energy to make it a reality.”

The Neighborhood Matching Fund has provided funding to the city’s neighborhoods for the past 25 years. Its contribution to neighborhoods can be seen across the city from the Fremont Troll to Georgetown’s Hat n’ Boots. Recipients of the fund match their awards through a combination of locally raised money, donated materials, and volunteer labor. In 2012, community volunteers pledged to invest $1.69 of donations and sweat equity for every $1 of taxpayer support.

“The Neighborhood Matching Fund has been emulated by cities all over the world,” said Bernie Matsuno, director of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. “What makes it so successful is the connection and engagement that happens when neighbors – who may not have known each other or been involved in a neighborhood project – come together to make improvements or create programs that benefit not only their community, but the city at large.”

This contest seeks to bring awareness to international causes and Seattle’s global development sector, and highlight the city’s role as a world leader in international development efforts. The Seattle area is home to more than 300 organizations working to improve lives in all 144 developing countries.

“The Puget Sound region is home to more than 300 organizations working to alleviate global poverty doing critical work such as educating girls in Rwanda, providing clean water and sanitation to communities in Ethiopia, strengthening women’s leadership in Guatemala, and providing small-business training to people with disabilities in Vietnam,” said Mauricio Vivero, CEO of SIF.

“Seattle’s a very outward looking city. We are home to organizations that work worldwide on fighting poverty, curing disease, and providing appropriate technology,” said Mayor Mike McGinn. “You can support this important work by joining the Seattle Ambassador program, and in June we’ll be announcing the first winner who will travel to see the work these organizations are doing in the field.”

The 12-member Landmarks Preservation Board makes recommendations to Seattle City Council for landmark designation and reviews all proposed physical alterations to designated features of landmark properties.

The Board is composed of two architects, two historians, one structural engineer, one representative each from the fields of real estate and finance, one member from the City Planning Commission, a Get Engaged member (a position for young adults ages 18-29), and three members at-large. All appointments are made by the Mayor, subject to City Council confirmation.

Board meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 3:30 p.m. The architect and historian members also serve on the Board’s Architectural Review Committee. Board members generally must commit approximately 10 hours per month to Board business.

Interested applicants must be Seattle residents, and board members serve without compensation. Those interested in being considered should send a letter of interest and resume by May 10, 2013. Electronic submissions are preferred, if possible.
