We’ll have free seeds (bush and pole), pots, poles, and soil to get you going.  A bean buffet (donations welcome or bring beans for the Food Bank) will spotlight the culinary versatility of beans, we’ll have heirloom bean varieties for sale in sample sizes, bean fun for kids, a teach in by a master gardener and info on the Beautiful Bean photo contest.  Start composing now for the bean haiku competition.  Come find out about our two neighborhood bean demo gardens and build yourself a vintage beanie.  The fun continues thru the summer culminating in a Harvest Supper and seed swap in October.  www.beaconahillofbeans.org

In December 2011 the project received a $100,000 award from the Parks & Green Spaces Levy for design and construction for a 1-acre portion of the food forest.

Jefferson Park Community Center(3801 Beacon Ave. S.) 

Community design of the Food Forest began in June and was supported by funds from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund ($22,000 in 2010). Beacon Hill residents and other local advocates of urban agriculture worked together on a design for up to 7 acres of land owned by Seattle Public Utilities.  The Beacon Food Forest is located directly west of Jefferson Park.

Nearly 100 folks worked to supply designers of the Harrison Design Team with a long list of features to include in the Food Forest. Fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, herbs, snack fruits and arbors of grapes, hops and kiwis all had strong support. These will be grown to demonstrate the principles of permaculture and showcase the high yields that can result from intensive plantings of selected edibles.

The Food Forest will also feature a community gathering space and childrens’ area and room for native varieties of food bearing plants. Community support for traditional gardening resulted in the design of many individual p-patch plots, larger allotment plots and a community growing space for single crops like corn or pumpkins.

Beacon Hill is a diverse neighborhood and organizers of the Food Forest look forward to learning more about the traditions of growing food from our neighbors and friends.

More than 120 performers showed their talent in four events in 2010 and this new tradition continues in 2011, beginning with the next “Beacon Rocks!” on June 26. A diverse group of performers in several different styles will bring music and art to the Beacon Hill Community. The Station Coffee House will be hosting a beer garden and food vending next to the Festival Street. Then the fun continues as we segue from Beacon Rocks to the Station Anniversary Party with more local hip hop and rock music from 5 pm to dark on the adjacent El Centro de la Raza grounds!

Bring your friends (and bringing a lawn chair isn’t a bad idea).
