FEMA Grant to Create Emergency Hubs in Southeast Seattle P-Patch Community Gardens

Mayor Mike McGinn announced today that the Seattle Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DoN) have been awarded $35,000 from the FEMA Community Resilience Innovation Challenge. The cash award will establish community emergency preparedness “Hubs” in selected P-Patch community gardens in southeast Seattle, in addition to providing training and outreach tools for gardeners and community members of diverse communities. Neighborhood Matching Fund supported emergency preparedness workshop at Arbor Heights Elementary

Arbor Heights Elementary School is inviting friends, family and neighbors to get connected and get prepared at an Emergency Preparedness event on October 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school (3701 SW 104^th Street). This event is a part of a disaster preparedness project at Arbor Heights Elementary supported by a $10,520 award from the Small and Simple Projects Fund. The event is intended to raise awareness about emergency preparedness and inspire people to take action so they are prepared for a disaster. Neighborhood Matching Fund supports neighbors preparing for disaster

On July 14, Lake City residents hosted an amazingly successful “Safety Saturday Festival” for the diverse population of residents and businesses on 33rd Avenue NE, 125th to 127th. Several city departments were on hand to help with the preparedness effort, including Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Office of Emergency Management, Seattle Public Library, and Seattle Police Department, along with the Seattle Neighborhood Group and the Lake City Community Council. Residents learned how to prepare and respond before, during, and after a disaster. This project has been supported by the Small Sparks Fund. The organizers are already excited about trying to develop an emergency preparedness HUB as a next step, and hope to apply for another Neighborhood Matching Fund. Congratulations to Ellie Rhoads and the Small Sparks steering committee!

Neighborhood Matching Fund hosts community workshops

Seattle Department of Neighborhoods will hold two workshops for community members interested in applying to the fall cycle of the Small and Simple Projects Fund, a program of the Neighborhood Matching Fund. Attendees will learn how to develop a competitive proposal for any project and hear about resources available for emergency preparedness projects. Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and Seattle Office of Emergency Management staff will be on hand to assist applicants and answer questions. The workshops will be held on:

Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Ballard Public Library (5614 22nd Ave NW); 6 – 8 p.m.; or
Thursday, Sept. 15 at The 2100 Building (2100 24^th Ave S); 6 – 8 p.m.

The deadline for the Small and Simple Projects Fund for awards up to $20,000 is Monday, October 17 by 5 p.m. To learn more, visit www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/nmf/.

April Preparedness Challenge, including a Grand Prize!

The Seattle Office of Emergency Management has teamed up with King and Snohomish Counties to help you and your neighbors prepare for disasters. There is a fun preparedness campaign going on in April. Even if folks aren’t part of the first 200 people to sign up and get a free crank flashlight/radio or emergency kit, everyone will be entered for the Grand Prize!

April Tip of the Month: It’s Disaster Preparedness Month in Washington. Don’t forget, at 9:45 a.m. on April 20 – it’s the state-wide “Drop, cover and hold” drill.
