Neighbors, business owners, students, faculty at the local schools, parents, developers, non-profits are coming to have their voices heard at this important event. In addition to the workshop there will be a Resource Fair where attendees will hear about projects and from providers supporting the health and strength of the neighborhood. Organizations already schedule to make an appearance so far include Casa Latina, Centerstone (formerly CAMP), Umoja Peace Center, Pratt, Coyote Central, Union Street Business Association, Coyote Central, Friends of Jimi Hendrix Park and the Central Area Senior Center.

The 23^rd Avenue Action Plan community development project is a City-community collaboration that will focus on crafting a shared vision and specific implementation actions for three Central Area community cores: 23^rd & Union, Cherry and Jackson. Planning for this project will use a Healthy Living Framework approach to highlight the connections between people and places, increase equity and improve health through the development of achievable, community-based outcomes and strong participation.

Please join us for this year’s first 23^rd Avenue Action Plan Community Workshop & Resource Fair, Sat. April 13, 2013 (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) at the Garfield Community Center (2323 E. Cherry Street). Together we will identify new actions and a shared vision for health, equity and character of three important Central Area community cores:

23^rdAvenue & E. Union Street
23^rd Avenue & E. Cherry Street, and
23^rd Avenue S. & S. Jackson Street

Find out who else is making a difference! Connect with fellow community stakeholders and share what is working well, what could be better and what opportunities exist in this part of the neighborhood. Look for more specifics about the community workshop over the next couple of weeks.

Congratulations to the Rainier Beach and Broadview-Bitter Lake-Haller Lake Neighborhoods!

Great news: the Rainier Beach and Broadview – Bitter Lake – Haller Lake neighborhood plan updates are done! Last month we held the final community meetings in the update process. Approximately 40 people attended the Broadview – Bitter Lake – Haller Lake meeting and 110 people attend the Rainier Beach meeting. Deputy Mayor Smith, Councilmember Burgess, DPD Director Diane Sugimura and DON Director Bernie Matsuno attended the Rainier Beach meeting and provided opening remarks.

We made a significant transition during the March meetings. The community is now leading the effort to shape the future of their neighborhood; the City will play a supportive role. We are excited that 19 Broadview – Bitter Lake – Haller Lake community members signed up for at least one of the three Action Teams: create a town center on Linden; improve safe walking and biking; and build community. In Rainier Beach, 64 people signed up to participate on Action Teams! Their teams will work on: a place for everyone; lifelong learning; growing food to develop healthy industry; and a beautiful safe place.

We are grateful to the community members who demonstrated their commitment to their neighborhood by helping us update the neighborhood plans. Thank you for being willing to roll up your sleeves and get the work done!

The Department of Planning and Development, working together with the Seattle Planning Commission, is inviting the public to weigh in on the important opportunities and challenges Seattle faces over the next twenty years. The City of Seattle is reviewing and updating its Comprehensive Plan and needs input from the public on what the City should focus on. This review is required to take place every seven years by the state Growth Management Act. Click here for more information and to take the survey.

Two Meetings for Neighborhood Plan Updates in March

We are updating the neighborhood plans in Rainier Beach and in Broadview/BitterLake/Haller Lake! It’s time to take a fresh look at those neighborhood plans. In the late 1990s, people worked together to create these plans, which are the communities’ plans to guide growth and change. Things have changed since 1999 when the plans were developed.

Is Broadview/Bitter Lake/Haller Lake or Rainier Beach your neighborhood? Then we want to hear from you. Come tell us what’s important to keep, what’s missing, and what needs attention. Together, let’s make these neighborhoods even better.

Be part of the conversation! There will be a series of community meetings to hear your suggestions on how to achieve your community’s vision. You will have the opportunity to help identify—and prioritize—goals and action steps for your neighborhood plan. The plan identifies actions that the community and the City should take to make your neighborhood a better place. You are the experts and your ideas will direct the work to update this important plan over the next year.

Neighbor Appreciation Day Community Fair in Bitterlake a Success

The Community Fair held at the Bitterlake Community Center on Saturday, February 12, was a hit, with a large turnout by the community. Mayor Mike McGinn and Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith were on hand to answer constituent questions. Information on groups and activities in the area were available, along with City department information. The Broadview/Bitter Lake/Haller Lake Neighborhood Advisory Committee, which is working on neighborhood plan updates for the area, was also in attendance to provide information on the process to neighbors.

Neighborhood Plan Update Outreach Staff Honored with SMA Award

The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Outreach Update (NPU) team members (Kerry Wade, Thomas Whittemore, and Sebhat Tenna) were awarded the Seattle Management Association’s Innovation and Change Management Award for the civic outreach and engagement they led through the POL model. This promising model is known as the Planning Outreach Liaison model when applied to the NPU process and the Public Outreach Liaison model when applied to other projects, such as the Police Chief Search, Youth and Family Initiative, and the Family and Youth Levy. The team recruited culturally competent liaisons, and provided training and technical support to take the message to historically underrepresented communities and transfer their voices back to the City.
