Japanese exchange students inspired by work in Youth and Family P-Patch

On July 28, New Holly Youth & Family P-Patch hosted a work party for about 10 students from Japan. Much weeding was done around the proposed picnic area. The students really enjoyed the experience and one of the students said she was inspired to see people from different countries working together and thinks gardens like this will help world peace!

High Point and NewHolly Farm Stands open this week

The High Point and NewHolly Farm Stands will open for business this week offering fresh organic produce picked right from their P-Patch market gardens. Fresh right now are spinach, carrots, leafy vegetables, new onions, peas, turnips and radishes, to name a few.

The High Point Farm Stand, located at 32^nd Ave. SW and SW Juneau Street, will be open every Wednesday beginning July 11 through September. The NewHolly Farm Stand, located at S. Holly Park Dr. between 40^th Ave. S. and Rockery Dr. S., will be open every Friday beginning July 13. The hours of operation for both are 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Seattle P-Patch Market Gardens is a program of the P-Patch Community Gardening Program in collaboration with the Seattle Housing Authority and P-Patch Trust to support low-income gardeners and neighborhoods. Its mission is to establish safe, healthy communities and economic opportunity through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and farm stand enterprises.

P-Patch Community Gardening Program, SPU and Seattle Tilth hold composting class for immigrant gardeners

On a dark day in late October, teachers and gardeners gathered for an introductory composting clinic at the newly redeveloped NewHolly Youth and Family P-Patch community garden. Nine gardeners, representing three different languages (Somali, Tigrinya, & Oromo) came from within NewHolly, but also from Rainier Vista and Yesler Terrace. Gardeners constructed the first compost bin and pile at the newly redeveloped garden, building a bin out of salvaged wood pallets, demonstrating a deep understanding of recycling materials! The project team is currently investigating offering a more extensive training experience for 2012.

P-Patch gardeners graduate from first multilingual Master Composter class

Helping the City of Seattle stay green and improve its environment, the Seattle P-Patch Gardening Program preserves green space as community gardens throughout Seattle and helps residents grow fresh organic produce. Improving the soil is the best way to grow great vegetables and preserve the environment of the City’s community gardens. Gardeners improve soil by composting in compost bins or by burying garden waste in the ground. Many community gardeners seek tips on how to improve soil for their gardens.

The Seattle P-Patch Community Gardening Program, Seattle Tilth and Seattle Public Utilities partnered to offer a Master Composter Training Program for gardeners in Southeast Seattle P-Patches. With the collaboration, Seattle Public Utilities provided funding for the classes, Seattle Tilth provided the composting educational training and Seattle P-Patch program recruited program participants and coordinated the program. In making the connection with communities and gardeners, P-Patch staff worked with volunteers and interpreters to get the word out to the community.

This training was focused on Southeast refugee and immigrants who are the residents of NewHolly and the surrounding neighborhoods. The training provided interpreters for five languages that included Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer, Mien and Lao. P-Patch staff and student intern volunteers coordinated interpreters and helped with the outreach strategy process. More than 15 participants attended the classes weekly from June through August.

The gardeners were very interested in learning the theory and gaining hands-on practice about the composting process and how to improve soil.

A graduation ceremony was held on August 4. Congratulations to all of the participants for completing the first multilingual Master Composter Program!

NewHolly Market Garden farm stand opens Friday

New Holly farm stand will open for the season on Friday, July 22. The farm stand is open every Friday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm through September 30, 2011. Gardeners living in the NewHolly neighborhoods grow, harvest and market their fresh produce. It does not get any fresher or more local! Click here for more information.
