1st Annual All City Barbershop Chat

Neighboring barbers will provide free basic haricuts to fathers and their son(s). This project will also provide food, entertainment, guest speakers and a facilitator to provoke and engage in an open discussion to address the issues of strengthening the relationship between a father and son. We encourage male mentors and father figures to bring your youth. Space is limited so come early and let the conversations begin!

P-Patch Community Gardening Program, SPU and Seattle Tilth hold composting class for immigrant gardeners

On a dark day in late October, teachers and gardeners gathered for an introductory composting clinic at the newly redeveloped NewHolly Youth and Family P-Patch community garden. Nine gardeners, representing three different languages (Somali, Tigrinya, & Oromo) came from within NewHolly, but also from Rainier Vista and Yesler Terrace. Gardeners constructed the first compost bin and pile at the newly redeveloped garden, building a bin out of salvaged wood pallets, demonstrating a deep understanding of recycling materials! The project team is currently investigating offering a more extensive training experience for 2012.

Seattle Community Farm Grand Opening Celebration this Saturday

Join Seattle City Councilmember Richard Conlin, Solid Ground, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Rainier Vista neighbors and community volunteers for the grand opening of the Seattle Community Farm, a partnership project of Solid Ground, Seattle Housing Authority, and Seattle Department of Neighborhoods P-Patch Community Gardening program.

WHEN: Saturday, June 25, 2011; 12 noon – 3 p.m.
Ceremony and speeches begins at 12:30 p.m.
Activities and tours begin at 1 p.m.

WHERE: Seattle Community Farm located west of 4015 Martin Luther King Way Jr. S in Seattle (between Lilac and Andover Streets).

BACKGROUND:
The Seattle Community Farm project transformed an unused ½-acre of land into a farm which educates, inspires, and increases food security for residents of southeast Seattle. The food grown will be cultivated by and shared with residents of the Rainier Vista community and Rainier Valley neighborhood, as well as the Rainier Valley Food Bank.

The Seattle Community Farm project started in 2009 as a partnership between Solid Ground’s Lettuce Link, Seattle Housing Authority, and the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods P-Patch Community Gardening Program. The project broke ground in 2010, and planting began in spring 2011. Solid Ground manages the project.

Funding: The USDA Community Food Project gave a matching grant to support the farm. SHA provided the land. Lastly, through the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods provided $87,000 in funding and staff time to develop the farm.
