A Story Runs Through It: Neighborhood Film Celebration and Awards is at 7 p.m., Oct. 17 at the SIFF Film Center (venue subject to change, please check website for updates). This culminating event of The Next 50’s Civic Action Month celebrates a project that seeks to capture stories about Seattle’s civic fabric through short films that Seattle area residents of all ages have submitted. The Celebration and Awards features winning films and other selected videos. Attendees may also engage in a dialogue about community and partake in a reception. www.seattlecenter.com.

Deadline to enter your submission is September 1!

A Story Runs through It, organized by Next 50 Civic Action Committee, with support from Seattle International Film Festival, the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Swedish, and MSN Postbox, aims to capture Seattle’s civic fabric, engage and train communities in the art of filmmaking as a means to develop their own future narratives, and establish closer ties between Seattle neighborhoods. Participants will develop short videos of up to three minutes, with minimum running time of at least 60 seconds.

Citizens of all ages from the greater Seattle area are invited to participate in A Story Runs Through It. Filmmakers may approach their topics through a variety of techniques including interviews with subjects, histories of events or locations, mythologies, fictions, examples of good works or local agents of change, and neighborhood needs or improvements. Filmmakers may also feature any region of the city, regardless of their residential address. Submission requirements, rules, prizes and more are available at the project’s website, www.thenextfifty.org /filmproject. New rooftop P-Patch community garden opens at Seattle Center – the largest in the country

The sun came out last Saturday just in time to celebrate the new UpGarden P-Patch community garden on the roof of Mercer Garage at Seattle Center. Mayor McMinn, Councilmembers Bagshaw and Godden, along with more than 100 community members and city staff, attended the event. The 30,000 square foot site will have more than 110 plots for community members to garden. This P-Patch is the country’s first large-scale rooftop community garden and the first municipal rooftop community garden fully accessible to the public.

Free filmmaking workshops offered at Seattle Center

Free workshops will be offered for those interested in learning more about creating a neighborhood film for A Story Runs Through It. Workshops will be led by Scott Macklin, Associate Director of the UW Masters of Communication in Digital Media program.

Workshops will be held at Seattle Center on June 16 and July 14, 2012 from 10:00am – 12:00pm on each date.
