Applications for the Seattle Youth Commission are now online at http://seattle.gov/syc! The Youth Commission gives Seattle residents aged 13-19 a voice in local government, and it’s staffed by Sol Villarreal from the Mayor’s Office; applications are being accepted through May 4 for the 2011-2012 year, which starts in June. If you know any outstanding teenagers who want to help ensure that youth are represented in City government, please talk to them about applying or call or email Sol for more information at 206-233-2656 or sol.villarreal@seattle.gov. Young people with strong ties to existing youth organizations are especially encouraged to apply.

Seattle Youth Commission Hosts Youth Town Hall May 22 at Seattle Center

Do you want to have your questions answered by Mayor McGinn or a City Council member? Do you want the opportunity to talk with experts about issues that you are passionate about, such as youth violence or the environment? If yes, then come to the Seattle Youth Town Hall on May 22, 2010, hosted by the Seattle Youth Commission!

The Youth Town Hall will be at the Vera Project at the Seattle Center between 12:00 and 4:00. You can learn about various youth organizations at the resource fair from 12:00-1:00. From 1:00-2:30 the Mayor and City Council members will be available to answer questions. After the question and answer, you can participate in round table discussions from 2:30-4:00, where you can share your ideas with others and talk with an expert in a specific area. Seattle Youth Commission application deadline May 12

We are now recruiting for the 2010-2011 Seattle Youth Commission. Applications will be accepted until Wednesday, May 12, 2010.

The Seattle Youth Commission (SYC), formerly the Mayor’s Youth Council, connects and engages Seattle’s youth in the City’s civic participatory process, exposing our elected officials to the voices and perspectives of YOUTH. This is a great opportunity for young people to develop their leadership, facilitation and public speaking skills and network with City Lawmakers, local community leaders, and other youth.

Youth Commissioners are expected to:

Organize a series of youth community meetings
Research, construct, and present policy recommendations to the Seattle Mayor and City Council
Participate in the planning of the annual Seattle Youth Town Hall
