The Get Engaged program is recruiting 15 young people aged 18-29 for service on Seattle’s public boards and commissions! Commissioners help shape policy decisions, make recommendations, and provide citizen participation in city government. The 15 boards range in interest areas — from design, to human rights to LGBT: there’s something for everyone.

In addition to service on a public board for one year, participants meet monthly as a cohort for leadership competency training, issue discussions and other activities.

Get Engaged is dedicated to advocating for youth voice in city affairs and to cultivating local leaders, especially those who have had limited opportunities to be involved in civics and community. You don’t need any prior experience serving on boards to be a qualified candidate.

Application deadline is May 14. Click here for more information.

Lettuce Link is looking for volunteers to help with the gardening and nutrition classes at Marra Farm this spring.

They will be teaching garden and nutrition education to elementary school students and need co-teachers. They work with children to plant their own gardens, cook healthy snacks, and read culturally relevant stories to learn about soil, plant parts, ecosystems and more.

This is a great fit if you’re energetic, have experience working with kids, are passionate about educating through an anti-oppression framework, and like the outdoors! There are three different classes – volunteers need to commit to come regularly to one of the class series. Volunteers must fill out a volunteer application and pass a Washington State Patrol background check.

Barton’s fence was nearly built, the stake was secured, the major paths were cut and the sod was moved, and the berms have a layer of sod. Bitter Lake is working on transplanting Alaska Cedars within their garden so their contractor can come in and begin the major garden excavations. For both gardens a lot more work still needs to get done and they rely heavily on volunteers throughout their community.

Both gardens’ community members are excited to get their gardening space built. Barton is holding another work party on Saturday May 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bitter Lake is continuing their work parties starting on Sunday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Anyone who is interested in gardening or who wants to get involved with their neighborhood events is invited!
