Last year our P-Patch gardeners’ “green thumbs” grew 40,145 pounds of fresh organic produce for Seattle food banks and meal programs. These food donations came from 36 P-Patch “giving gardens,” which are P-Patch plots dedicated to growing food for donation. In addition, at least 20% of the total food donations came from individual P-Patch gardeners. P-Patchers volunteer to steward the giving gardens and handle the delivery of fresh produce over the growing season. To celebrate the “giving garden” season, Interbay P-Patch Community Garden just held its annual kick-off with more than 20 gardeners preparing soil and planting early crops. Here is a quote from an Interbay P-Patch gardener about last year’s harvest: “This was a great year in the Interbay Giving Garden! …Despite the heat, which was a little hard on the kale, chard and collards, we nonetheless harvested a combined total of 266 lbs. of those greens. We had our best cucumber year ever, with 46 pounds donated. Herbs were a huge success this year, too: 17 lbs. of chives, 15 lbs. of basil and 14 lbs. of flat-leaf parsley. That’s a lot of leaves!!! … We’ll be rearin’ to go come spring!” Congratulations, P-Patch gardeners, for sharing with and caring for your Seattle community!
