Teens ages 13-19 address issues important to youth

The City of Seattle is now accepting applications for the Seattle Youth Commission (SYC), a 15-member commission of ages 13-19 that addresses issues of importance to youth. Appointed by the Mayor and Seattle City Council, youth serving on this commission work with elected officials, City staff, community leaders, and young people citywide to make positive changes through policy, organizing, and events. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

Commissioners serve a two-year term and are expected to attend bi-weekly SYC meetings, and other SYC planned events. Meetings are held at Seattle City Hall.

To apply, complete and submit the online application by May 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

Seattle Youth Commission Projects

In addition to representing youth across the city, commissioners receive hands-on experience in the public sector and learn how to cultivate a youth voice in city policy. As a commissioner, you will:

  • Advise the Mayor, City Council and City departments on issues that impact youth in Seattle,
  • Collaborate on a community project with other Youth Commissioners,
  • Plan an annual event (or several events) that connect youth to local government and topics they care about, and
  • Cultivate a deeper appreciation for cultural competency and inclusive civic engagement.
