Attending the All-America City Award: A Transformative Experience
by Linda Li, Community Liaison
Attending the All-America City Award was nothing short of inspiring. Cities from all across the country had gathered—big, small, rural, urban. We heard amazing stories about resilience, equity, innovation, and community building—it became immediately clear that this was more than just a competition. It was a celebration of collaboration, engagement, and community pride.
Our delegation brought with us a cross-section of our city—youth, community liaison, city officials, and nonprofit partners—all united by a shared story of ground-up, grassroot solutions for change, and how the city works WITH the community, not just for the community.
Over the course of three days, we attended lectures on local democracy and community building, enjoyed talent shows by members from other delegations, learned in each delegation’s well-designed presentation, and shared inclusive and forward-thinking ideas for a better community. These sessions were not only educational but also deeply motivational, showcasing best practices and real stories from other cities overcoming similar challenges.
The highlight, of course, was our team’s presentation to the jury on Sunday morning. Standing on that stage, I could feel my lips trembling, but when my colleagues spoke passionately about the city-wide initiatives, I felt a deep swell of pride and confidence. I not only spoke about my role in engaging the community with the Seattle City Light Transportation Electrification Program, but also stepped up twice to answer different questions from the jury. Such bravery was actually encouraged several times by fellow delegation members during rehearsals, but I thought I would never have had.
When the final evening arrived, and we all gathered for the awards ceremony, there was an electric anticipation in the air. As they announced the ten winning cities, each name was met with thunderous applause. Our city’s name was called very early, the 2nd in order. It was an overwhelming moment of joy and validation. I remember I jumped out of my seat, with tears in my eyes. We stood together on the stage, waving hands to audience, knowing this honor symbolized the hard work, unity, and care we poured into our community.
Now I brought home from the All-America City Award experience more than joy and pride. It sparked a redefined recognition of our identity and role as a community liaison, a renewed commitment to civic engagement and community building, and a deepened appreciation for the power of collaboration and communication. It reminded me that when people come together with purpose, passion, and a willingness to listen, real change happens.
