Five years ago, day of service started as an annual citywide volunteer day of action when Seattle neighbors could come together to roll up their sleeves and give back — with volunteer opportunities in neighborhoods across the city.

Now, Show Up, Seattle! Day of Service came back on September 26, 2026, bringing together nearly 1,600 volunteers across 143 total events citywide, with participation totals continuing to grow information is reconciled. There were 110 events open to the public volunteers, with an additional 33 private volunteer events. Seattle Department of Transportation’s Urban Cleanup Team collected all of the waste and debris left by volunteer hosts and found that it weighed more than 10,000 pounds!
But there was a simple question at the heart of Show Up, Seattle!: If we love this city, what are we willing to do for it?
Of course, the City has a responsibility to provide services and care for the public spaces we all share. But a city is not something we simply consume. It is something we all have a hand in caring for, too.
We ask a lot of our city. We use its parks and streets, gather in its public spaces, build our lives in its neighborhoods, and call it home. It makes sense that we also find ways to give something back.

That can mean volunteering with a community organization, picking up litter on your block, tending a garden, helping a neighbor, or spending a Saturday making a shared space a little better. These acts don’t replace the City’s responsibility. They are part of our responsibility to one another.
That is what makes a day like Show Up, Seattle! Day of Service so meaningful. For one day, thousands of people across Seattle chose not just to live in this city, but to participate in caring for it. Caring for you.
We showed up because we love this place. And when you love a place, you don’t just ask what it can do for you. You ask what you can do for it, too.
