Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board to conduct 2021 election by mail

Due to the continued impacts of COVID-19 and ongoing public health concerns, the 2021 Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board election will occur by mail-in ballot only. There will be no in-person voting this year.

The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON) Historic Preservation Program annually hosts an election to facilitate the selection of Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board members who have been nominated by the community. All residents, persons who operate businesses, and property owners in the Ballard Avenue Landmark District, who have registered to vote at least (14) days prior to the District election, are eligible to vote. The deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, November 16, 2021.

In-Person Voter Registration

Seattle Department of Neighborhoods will host six in-person voter registration opportunities. Eligible voters can register at the following dates/times, or by arrangement with the Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board Coordinator:

Location: Ballard Customer Service Center (conference room), 5604 22nd Ave NW

  • Thursday October 14, 9:00 am – 11:00 am
  • Friday October 15, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Thursday October 21, 9:00 am – 11:00 am
  • Friday October 29, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Tuesday November 9, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Tuesday November 16, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

2021 Election

Ballots and self-addressed, stamped envelopes will be mailed to all registered voters on November 17, 2021. Completed ballots must be received via USPS Mail by Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

Candidates for four (4) of the seven (7) total positions on the Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board will appear on the 2021 ballot. Term limits will be staggered to account for the postponed 2020 election.

  • Position #2 for Property Owner (term expires 6/30/23)
  • Position #4 for Property Owner or Business Person (term expires 6/30/23)
  • Position #6 for Property Owner or Business Person (term expires 6/30/22)
  • Position #7 for Property Owner (term expires 6/30/22)

Community members are invited to nominate candidates for these positions. Nomination forms must be completed and returned to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods by 5:00 PM on Tuesday, November 2nd.

The Ballard Avenue Landmark District is a nationally recognized historic district established in 1976 to commemorate the neighborhood’s unique place in Ballard’s history. To preserve its special character, the Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board reviews and approves all changes to building exteriors within the district before the changes are made, such as signs, awnings, window transparency, paint colors, street furniture and new construction.
