Here’s your chance to serve on an advisory committee that will recommend whether to grant modifications to City zoning regulations affecting John Muir Elementary School located at 3301 S. Horton St., Seattle, WA 98144.
The Seattle School District is requesting the following modifications (also known as “departures”) from City zoning regulations per Seattle Municipal Code, SMC 23.51B, and the Public School Departures Process, SMC 23.79:
- Increased total ground coverage of all buildings or structures on a site.
- Reduced setbacks, which are distances from a property line where you are not allowed to build without special permission.
- Reduced bicycle parking capacity (short-term).
The Seattle School District has a detailed presentation of the modifications which you can view on the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods website.
The advisory committee will convene up to three public meetings at John Muir Elementary School (3301 S. Horton St) over a three-month period. The committee will receive briefings from the Seattle School District and gather and evaluate public comment on the departure requests.
Following these meetings, the committee will make a recommendation to the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI) to either grant or deny the requested modifications. The committee may also recommend relevant conditions to be applied to granting these changes to minimize its impacts on the surrounding neighborhood. SDCI will make the final decision.
If you are neighbors who reside or own a business or property within 600 feet of the school, residents in the surrounding neighborhood, parent–teacher association (PTA) members, and parents of students, you can apply to join the committee. Other committee members will include a representative from the Seattle School District and City of Seattle.
