The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods is seeking volunteers for an advisory committee to make recommendations on zoning modification requests for Aki Kurose Middle School located at 3928 S. Graham St., Seattle, WA 98118.
The Seattle School District is requesting the following modifications (also known as “departures”) from City zoning regulations per Seattle Municipal Code, SMC 23.51B, and the Public School Departures Process, SMC 23.79:
- Increased lot coverage
- Increased building height
- Reduced long-term bicycle parking
- Electronic reader board
The Seattle School District has a detailed presentation of the modifications which you can view on the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods website here.
The advisory committee will meet for up to three public meetings at Aki Kurose Middle School over a three-month period. The committee will receive briefings from the Seattle School District and gather and evaluate public comment on the departure requests.
Following these meetings, the committee will make a recommendation to the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI) to either grant or deny the requested modifications. The committee may also recommend relevant conditions to be applied to granting these changes to minimize its impacts on the surrounding neighborhood. SDCI will make the final decision.
Eligible applicants include:
- community members who live or own a business or property within 600 feet of the school
- residents of the surrounding neighborhood
- representatives at large to represent city-wide education issues
- members of the Aki Kurose Middle School Parent Teacher Association
- parents of students at Aki Kurose Middle School
Other committee members will include a representative from the Seattle School District and the City of Seattle.
