Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at City Hall

Cesar Chavez. Helen Rodriguez-Trías. Lin Manuel Miranda. Sonia Sotomayor. Roberto Maestas. Dr. Ellen Ochoa. These are just a few Latinos and Latinas whose work and advocacy have helped shape the history and culture in the United States. From scientific discoveries and space exploration, to social justice organizing and artistic and literary achievements, Latino/a people and culture have been an integral part of our national landscape for centuries.

Celebrated from September 15 to October 15 each year, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to give extra recognition to the many contributions of Latino/a communities in the United States. On September 24, City of Seattle staff gathered at City Hall to celebrate with food, music, stories, and connection. The event opened with a land and labor acknowledgement from Seattle Youth Commissioner Mohini Kaplan and an opening blessing and drum solo by Dr. Daniel Perez, Seattle Department of Early Education and Learning. The program also included remarks from AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent; Dr. Ismael Fajardo, Seattle Department of Early Education and Learning Deputy Director; Jenifer Chao, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Director; and a proclamation read by Seattle City Councilmembers Maritza Rivera and Alexis Mercedes Rinck.

A special thanks to the students at El Centro de La Raza José Martí Child Development Center at Hirabayashi Place, and the dancers from Bailadores de Bronce from the beautiful performances.
