Help Shape Decisions Impacting Local Renters: Apply for the Seattle Renters’ Commission

Most people living in Seattle are renters; and the city consistently populates the top ten list of “most expensive cities” to rent. The Seattle Renters’ Commission (SRC)  was established in 2017 to represent diverse renter voices from across the city. Its purpose is to provide information, direction, and counsel to the Mayor, Seattle City Council, and City departments regarding issues and policies that affect local renters.

The Seattle Renters’ Commission has had meaningful impact on policy and the experience of renters in Seattle. And now they need your help!

The City of Seattle seeks community members to fill three vacant positions on the Seattle Renters’ Commission to help advise the City on policies and issues of interest to renters.

The Commission is composed of 15 members – six appointed by City Council, six appointed by the Mayor, two selected by the SRC, and one position filled by a young adult through the YMCA Get Engaged program. The Commission currently has three vacant seats: one to be appointed by Council and two by Mayor Wilson. Members must be a renter within the City of Seattle at the time of their appointment and throughout the duration of their term.

As open positions are filled the Commission continuously strives to diversify the experience of its members to be geographically representative of Seattle and include people living in an array of rental housing types including students, low-income renters, people with past felony convictions, subsidized housing residents, and those who have experienced homelessness.  SRC meetings are open to the public, and the commissioners serve without compensation.
