During the weekend of August 28-29, neighbors worked together to create both a public art project and a traffic calming tool at the intersection of Interlake Avenue North and 41st Street . Using in-kind donations and volunteer labor, combined with funds from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Small Sparks award, they painted a sprawling sea turtle in the middle of the intersection. Neighbors of all ages worked for two days to create the mural, which was designed by a local artist, and was the brainchild of a longtime resident of the neighborhood. The Small Sparks Neighborhood Matching Fund is a one-time only award to support community members in becoming civically engaged. For information about this and other award funds, click here.
